Wutai Shan Buddhist Garden Construction Co. Ltd. (2384331 Ontario Inc.) is seeking 25 Ancient Chinese Wood Construction Artisans with expertise in ancient “dougong” mortise and tenon joinery techniques to inspect, remediate and/or re-create pre-constructed rosewood timber components, and to re-fit and re-assemble piece by piece showcase authentic Tang dynasty style reconstructed replica temple structures and out buildings. This includes timber frames and decorative roof & ceiling (lattice ceiling constructed of interwoven/layered wooden strips joined to the beams) with intricate ornamentation, and elaborate wooden cupolas/coffers to accurate historical dimensions.

Artisans must read and interpret historical design blue prints and utilize authentic hand tool techniques without the use of wood glues, screws, nails or any metal fasteners of any kind. Methodology includes creating/re-fitting a series of slices and dovetails connecting disparate structural elements, fastening crossbeams with vertical posts and columns. It also includes application of wood preservation compounds and lengthening - combining two beams end to end into a long one without sacrificing strength. This type of joinery was applied largely to construction of ancient royal buildings and temples in China – all joints are functional, beautiful and invisible. This methodology is an intricate system of cutting and connecting elements into the wood, requiring precision, to not just perfectly fit together but to lock together, and to support weight without breaking, and to safely bear loads and stay that way soundly for centuries, as the original historic structures have done.

Qualified candidates will have at least 2 years experience in ancient Chinese dougong mortise and tenon joinery techniques specific to Tang dynasty style reconstruction. Candidates must be able to work cooperatively with contemporary construction trades and supervisors to ensure historical authenticity while meeting modern building code requirements; translation services will be provided if necessary.

Contract of employment is specific to this one unique and internationally recognized project only, and is for two years. Opportunities for continued employment utilizing this unique expertise in Canada are essentially non-existent.

Hourly rate is $25.38/hour for 40 hours per week, plus medical insurance benefits and 10 days paid annual vacation. Housing, meals and travel between sites is provided at no charge.
